Strawberry Bridge,
The Rest of the Story!
On the last newsletter, I talked about the old Mayberry Bridge. That beautiful walking bridge is also known as Strawberry Bridge. In spring of 1974, right before the construction of the concrete Mayberry Bridge, a truck driver found himself lost while carrying 32 tons of strawberries and got turned around. Travelling about 45 mph, he hit the bridge and with the weight limit of 5 tons, the bridge collapsed. His entire load of strawberries went floating towards Reno, and the locals were seen "picking" strawberries that day by the pail full on our Truckee River.
That same bridge is now in need of repair and hopefully will be getting a facelift shortly. Closure is anticipated for May 1 - May 19, and we will update our website if the repairs dates are adjusted.
With the Truckee flowing so well now, make sure to take the time to listen. When you cross the bridge, Hunter Creek enters into the Truckee. While it may not sound like Niagara Falls, it's still a wonderful roar of water. We are experiencing a spring to celebrate, so please take some time to again, sit and listen.
