March 2022 News

construction equipment building trail along Truckee River
Granite Construction donated equipment and material to build a new fishing access trail to the Truckee River east of Sparks.

NDOW Opens New Fishing Trail

Thanks to a significant contribution from Granite Construction in material, equipment, and labor to lay base material for a footpath, construct two bridges and install fencing, NDOW opened a new trail section just west of Lockwood.  The trail runs along the river for about ¼ mile beyond the park in Lockwood.  Its primary appeal is for fishing access and it makes a pleasant short walk.

Thanks to Granite and also to Robison Engineering for providing the mapping and survey staking.

Congratulations to NDOW!

Watch Out for Wild Horses on Trail

When exploring the new NDOW trail, or farther east at Mustang-USA Parkway, be aware that the horses you may encounter are not tame. Wild horses are unaccustomed to bikes, pedestrians, and dogs.  They may become protective, especially when with their young. Make sure there is room to move away -  for you and for them. Keep your distance and protect your dogs by keeping them on leash.  Please don't feed wildlife.

Here is a smelly but interesting factoid…. Stallions mark their territory by creating “stud piles” of manure.  I don’t think any other trail in the region has this as a possible trail hazard.

Family Estate Planning Series  March 16 - May 4
The Family Estate Planning Series is offered twice a year by the Community Foundation of Northern Nevada and offers free information about wills, trusts, estates, etc. It's an excellent opportunity to learn about these essential topics from experts who donate their time. These free, in-person classes run eight consecutive Wednesdays, March 16 through May 4. The 90-minute sessions are held at the Sierra View Library in Reno Town Mall. Participants are asked to commit to the eight sessions, as each one complements and builds the others. You can attend either the 10:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. sessions.

Visit the Community Foundation website nevadafund.org for a complete description. Please call the Community Foundation at 333-5499, ext. 13, or email Jamie Klund to sign up. We look forward to seeing you there!
