February 2022 News

An Amazing Gift

In January of 2021, a generous and low-key man who loved bicycling and trails passed away.  His name was John Strangman and he lived in Reno. John was a retired attorney who left his estate to charity, including several trail organizations in our region. Just one year to the day after his death, John’s amazing gift of $1.8 million was received by TPT for our endowment!!
Every nonprofit dreams of having an endowment to generate secure and permanent income to sustain its mission forever. John’s huge gift will begin a true transformation for TPT, by generating future interest income to care for and sustain this visionary trail that we have all invested our time and money in for 18 years. It will also provide some welcome relief for our all-volunteer board and management team. We are VERY honored that John chose the TPT.
What a blessing to know that 20 years or 100 years from now there will be the means to sustain this community asset. Heartfelt thanks to you John!

Trail Conditions

⦁ MUD AND ICE!
Not surprisingly, the section of trail near Mustang has had some muddy sections and some fallen trees, and upriver near Floriston and Hirschdale, there is still much snow.
⦁ SNOW REMOVAL
Happily, two popular paved trails on the TPT route have regular snow removal done by the cities: the Legacy Trail from Truckee to Glenshire is cleared by the Town of Truckee, and the Mogul-Verdi link is cleared by the City of Reno and volunteers.
⦁ UNWELCOME ALARM SIREN
A property owner has installed a loud motion alarm along Hirschdale Road, along with another gate in an effort to stop vehicles from driving east on Hirschdale Road. This alarm and gate are east of the Hinton Road Junction which is east of the bridges over the Truckee River and railroad tracks. Please note that this alarm is not meant for pedestrians and cyclists using the trail. You are welcome to continue along the trail, passing by the gate and ignoring the alarm. Please do not get off the old roadbed because there is private property on both sides of it. Thanks for your cooperation.

A warm dry January made for good conditions on the McCarran Ranch trail section.

Recruiting Note
As we resume the world of in-person gatherings, TPT could use a few additional exhibit tenders for 2022. If you like meeting and chatting with people, it’s a fun volunteer job. If you don’t like that aspect of it, a strong back to help set up and take down is also needed!

Thanks to our 2021 Volunteers

Every year, 70-90 people help the Trail, and earn heartfelt appreciation. This year, the COVID pandemic made it exceptionally difficult to volunteer, so thank you everyone! For 2021 helpers, we will have blue T-shirts (please call ASAP if you decline the shirt!). Here they are—thank you everyone!

If you would like to know more about adopting a section of trail, please write to info@tahoepyramidtrail.org. There are opportunities to adopt a new section east of Sparks, or to relieve one of our long-time adoption teams in the California Canyon.

Other volunteer roles needed for 2022 include: event coordinator and helper, brochure distributor, jersey sales manager, exhibit table tender, insurance advisor, sign planner and installer. We also would love to see new faces at the “Leadership Team.” Please get in touch if you are interested in one of these volunteer jobs.
