thank you, trail adopters!

Trail adopters volunteer to help maintain sections of the Trail. Without them, the trail would be overgrown and unusable in spots, so we can’t thank them enough. Ron Papson is the coordinator of these volunteers who are asked to work on the trail once each quarter, removing weeds, rocks, dirt slides, and trash, plus they cut back overgrown vegetation.

There are 16 groups, mostly made up of friends, families, and organizations, but we also have larger companies volunteer, too.  Each group volunteers for 2 years, and they perform a vital role for the Trail as there is no paid staff for trail maintenance. Everyone who uses the trail can help, however; please report any problems you see—downed trees, washouts, or other safety issues—using the
form on our website. The photos below are an example of the hard work our trail adopters do for the Trail. Thanks again, all!

'ride the rez' is back

Until last year, this beautiful fall ride had been an annual TPT event. Due to the pandemic, it was canceled but save the date for Saturday, Oct. 23! The ride from Wadsworth to Pyramid Lake along the Truckee River is 23 miles on paved, dirt roads, and single track, suitable for mountain or gravel bikes. Expect the ride to take about 4 hours and while most of the trail is rolling or flat, there is a hilly 4-6 miles of single track. There will be a trailer shuttle (for those who reserve a space) at the end to haul bikes back to Wadsworth unless you want to ride both ways! A day-use permit is required by the Paiute tribe who manages the reservation, and it is $22 per carload so carpool if you can. Permits can be purchased at online at https://pyramidlake.us/. More information will be posted on Facebook, Instagram, and our website.
Let’s all pray the smoke clears by then!

hirschdale trail update

We mentioned in June that the TPT is open to pedestrians and cyclists from Hirschdale to Floriston, but cars are not allowed east of the Hinton Rd turnoff from Hirschdale Rd. We are working with the county and a private landowner to find alternate parking options, but for right now there is no longer any trail parking available at the east end of Hirschdale Rd.

TPT in the news

The Sierra Sun recently wrote a great article about the history of the Truckee River bike path and its future with the TPT's efforts. Here's an excerpt: "Thank the Lake Tahoe Railway and Transportation Company for making a space for the present bike path from Tahoe City to River Ranch. The Bliss family built and operated the railroad between Truckee and Tahoe City from 1900 until 1923. Then the Southern Pacific railroad took it over and operated it until World War II. Little did Duane L. Bliss and his family know that their roadbed would help build a bicycle trail from Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake." You can read the full article here.

money matters

Century Circle Donors (donations of $100 or more) pay for the year-in, year-out operations, including engineering, planning, and other important tasks. Our goal this year is to have 250 of these donors. For those past CC participants who haven’t sent in their contribution, please send it in now. For anyone new, we need you help to meet our goal! Please send check to the address below or use this PayPal link.

volunteer spotlight

Many volunteers help to make TPT success. Some are heavily involved, while others help with single tasks, but all are important. In future issues we will be highlighting our volunteers and how they help keep our organization running. We are always looking for help and if interested in volunteering please call President Janet Phillips at 775-825-9868 or visit our website for more information (click here).

This month's volunteer: Blair O'Neil, TPT Web Creator & Content Manager

Blair's first love is really cycling which is what first drew him to TPT for some volunteer work in the first place. He thought that perhaps utilizing either his design or web skills (30+ years of graphic design/marketing experience & over 45 years of dedicated cycling) might be helpful. After some preliminary TPT website support alongside the other Communication Team members, he spearheaded the TPT website rebuild task and has continued to be very active in the website content management. Of course, he is only one person of several on the TPT Communications Team that also plays critical roles in the never-ending stream of new information that needs to be posted. So if you ever see Blair out on the trail, give a shout and have a chat. You can usually tell it's him by his orange helmet and the restored 90s ATB/MTB non-suspension bike he's riding.

Does this sound like you? TPT is in need of a person skilled in Microsoft Office, especially Excel, to help manage our ever-growing database. Contact Janet (info above).

Please report trail conditions to our website—we depend on trail users to keep an eye on things: tahoepyramidtrail.org/report-trail-conditions/  To see ALL trail condition notes, please visit tahoepyramidtrail.org
