Ride the Rez
This year’s ride will be Saturday, October 23, and is organized by the Procrastinating Pedalers Bicycle Club with the help of the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail. Amy Collins of College Cyclery will lead the ride, which departs at 9 a.m. from the Nixon Store, 15 miles north of Wadsworth on Hwy 447.
The ride will be on the Nixon to Wadsworth section of the TPT and is approximately 22 miles. The trail is made up of 1-2 miles of pavement, 11-15 miles of dirt road, and 5-6 miles of single track, and usually takes 2-3 hours one-way. The trail runs close to the Truckee River and offers outstanding views of the river, changing colors, and surrounding lands. There will be a planned stop, so bring a snack and plenty of water.
Some things to note about this year's ride:
- Participants must be a member of the Procrastinating Pedalers, due to insurance issues. Membership applications are found at pedalers.org.
- Helmets are required.
- Masks are not mandatory but recommended when in close contact.
- This is a Mountain or Gravel Bike only ride and Class 2 E-bikes are not permitted.
- The ride is on the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation and a day-use permit is required! Permits are $22 per vehicle and carpooling is recommended. Permits are only available at pyramidlake.us/permits
- TPT will provide a trailer carry bikes back to Nixon, but riders should plan to have a car at the Wadsworth School (the end of the ride) for the return trip to Nixon. Space is limited. Please RSVP for the shuttle to Mike Traynor mht3241940@att.net
- Dress in layers! It will likely be cool so wear proper clothing.
More information about the ride can be found on the Pedalers' MeetUp page, and you can sign up there, also.

bear sighting
On 9/23/21 at approximately 10a.m. local time just east of Farad, a Black Bear foraging for food was seen by a trail walker. The bear did run away during this encounter. Additionally, there have been other recent reports of new Black Bear scat in the same area.
During this time of year (Fall) bears tend to be more active before the winter arrives. Please exercise caution if you are hiking, running or cycling in the Farad area. Use our Trail Condition Form to report bear activity or other trail issues you encounter: https://tahoepyramidtrail.org/report-trail-conditions
While Black Bears are generally considered non-aggressive to humans, mother bears, injured bears, or startled bears can pose a serious threat to your safety.

Volunteer Spotlight:
Helen O'Brien
I have been volunteering with the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail since 2015. I knew the trail, having hiked and biked various segments, and decided to attend the annual kickoff event that year. I was so impressed with the organization and all that had been accomplished solely by volunteers that I wanted to help. I am a long-time Reno resident and a retired CPA. I was the CFO of John Ascuaga's Nugget and have been involved with several local nonprofits over the years in administrative capacities and felt that was where I could be most helpful. I now assist in the finance area, produce the donor acknowledgement letters and whatever else I can do. There are so many opportunities to get involved with TPT, from down and dirty on the trail to support roles, with a range of time commitments. Janet had a vision many years ago of a trail to connect our two world-renowned lakes, and it is near completion. She, and all my fellow volunteers, share a huge sense of pride in this wonderful local resource.

Thank you to our third quarter donors! Your support is invaluable to the Trail. For those regular Century Circle ($100) donors who haven't given yet, please accept this gentle reminder of how important you are! We also have high hopes that we can set a new record for our Millennial Circle ($1,000) donors this year, and we only need nine more people!
