The Rotary Club of Truckee surprised Janet Phillips at its recent meeting by awarding her its top recognition: The Paul Harris Fellowship Award. For more than 60 years, Rotary clubs worldwide have presented the award to community members in recognition of exceptional public service. Each year Truckee Rotary awards Paul Harris Fellowships to individuals who are outstanding examples of what it means to live a life of "Service Above Self." It is rare that the award is presented to an individual who lives outside of Truckee, but the club wanted to acknowledge the benefit Janet's efforts have made to the Truckee-Tahoe community.
trail access changes
Parking near the bridge at Hirschdale has been reduced, so please be aware that it is likely you'll have to park further to the west than you might normally have.
events
Come learn about the WASHOE ARTRAIL—a public participatory experience along the Truckee River from Reno/Sparks to Gerlach—on June 18 from noon-1 p.m. Meeting at Crystal Peak Park in Verdi, learn about the trailhead monument created by the ROAM Collective, a group comprised of contemporary architect Jack Hawkins, sculptor and musician Davey Hawkins, landscape photographer Scott Hinton, and geographer Kerry Rohrmeier. The event is a part of the Nevada Museum of Art's Art Bite series, and is free to NMA members or $10 for all others. Visit the musuem's website for more information about this cool collision of trails and art!
THE TRUCKEE RIVER TRASH AND CAST is a cool new event combining river cleanup and fly fishing, organized by a group of anglers who care about our river. They describe it as “a fishing tournament with a purpose.” You can read more about this fun and river-friendly event which starts on Saturday June 5 at trashandcast.com. The location is Mustang Road east of Reno at the north bank of the river.
keeping TPT clean
Did you know that TPT trail cleanup is done by volunteers?! Nationwide, recreation areas report record-breaking quantities of trash. Please help us keep TPT clean and free of litter, both by taking your own trash, and helping pick up after others. The areas near I-80 are the worst, so please lend a hand at the trail access points, especially Farad and Floriston.
On a related and icky topic, dog waste is also an increasing problem on trails. Tahoe Weekly recently had an article about the science of dog poop (hint: it is NOT the same as wildlife poop). Dog waste is categorized by the EPA in the same category as herbicides, insecticides, oil, grease, toxic chemicals, and acid drainage from abandoned mines. You can read the story here.
Please take your dog’s waste home with you!
what a difference volunteers make!
TPT is kept clear of weeds by a dedicated army of volunteers, with 15 trail-adoption teams working on the Truckee Canyon from Hirschdale to Fleish Bridge.
These before-and-after photos tell the story. Without our volunteers, the trail wouldn’t even be visible!
If you would like to be on the wait list for trail adoption, please fill out this contact us form.
