What do you and some very cool local and international celebrities have in common? Well, the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail, of course.
The last few months have been the perfect time to take a ride, with great weather accompanying many users who had lots of free time on their hands.
Pro cyclist Levi Leipheimer rode the Trail in 2020, and so did Renoite and Olympic skier David Wise, pictured at right. David hit the Trail in April last year, and after his ride, this is what he had to say:
"I've lived here my whole life, but my one complaint is there are not enough trails for my mountain bike. This Tahoe-Pyramid Trail is pretty epic. Thank you, Janet."
Tahoe City kiosk unveiled
A beautiful interpretive kiosk at 64-Acre Park in Tahoe Citywas installed in late July. Chock full of great photos, our terrific map, and great information, this new sign is a great introduction to the trail in this well-used section of the trail.
Mark Kimbrough, pictured, deserves major kudos for his efforts on this project. He helped get approval for installation, hired a contractor to build the kiosk, created the panel's basic design, got the kiosk to the park, and organized and supervised volunteers during installation.
Many thanks to the Community Fund of the Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation for funding this starting-point landmark.
Celebrating a Trail hero
The Tahoe-Pyramid Trail suffered the tragic loss of a dear friend and avid trail enthusiast. James Michael Phillips (“Mike” to those who knew him), the loving husband of Janet Phillips, passed unexpectedly on May 20 after an accidental head injury in his woodshop. Known for his vast kindness and generosity, Mike was always ready to lend a hand for on-the-trail projects and provide financial patronage as well, including 17 years of unwavering support for Janet’s volunteer trail leadership and planning efforts. In October, a dedication of a plaque and bench at Fleish Bridge was made to honor Mike. You can read about it on the TPT website here.

Award winner
The Tahoe-Pyramid Trail was one of only two winners of the 2020 CaliforniaTrails & Greenways Awards in the category of Merit Award for Development! California Trails & Greenways recognizes the significant contributions made to the trails community and shares a little about the winning projects and programs on its website. Farad gets a smooth upgrade
If you've ridden the trail near Farad, you have probably noticed the coarse gravel section of trail. It was a bumpy and difficult section, but thanks to dedicated effort by Bill von Phul and a work crew from Rock’n’Rose of Truckee, in December the surface was upgraded to smooth, compacted dirt.
You can read more about this major trail upgrade on the TPT website here. There are some incredible photos which show just how much work goes into maintaining and improving the Trail. This proect is a great example of how the Trail is improved each year with the help of our partners and donations. This projectwas funded by:
TPT endowment earnings
Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation’s Nature Fund
and Tahoe Donner Giving Fund
Renown
Thanks to 4th Quarter Century Circle ($100+) donors!
We all know 2020 was a challenging year for many of us. To those who still chose to make a financial contribution to TPT, we extend our most heartfelt thanks for your generosity.
