Cookie Ride!

After a hiatus in 2020, the 16th ALMOST-ANNUAL “COOKIE RIDE” will be Sunday May 23, celebrating the anniversary of the Mogul-Verdi trail 2005 opening. Homemade cookies and lemonade will be served at Crystal Peak Park in Verdi at 11 a.m., with each bike club, running club, and friends’ groups planning your own departure time and place. We serve only home-baked cookies, and we need more bakers to make 2 dozen cookies each. To volunteer, email Anna Bell at bellaj2006@yahoo.com.

Welcome new trail adopters!
Two of our trail adoption teams are stepping down—thank you very much to Gabe and Tricia Strouse and the Truckee Dirt Riders for your hard work! Welcome aboard to three new teams who are stepping up for a 2-year stint:
⦁ Sam Limerick and the First United Methodist Church Hiking Group
⦁ Ron Papson and his IGT friends
⦁ Granite Construction
If you would like to know more about trail adoption or be placed on the wait list for new opportunities, please email Bill von Phul at
bvonphul@earthlink.net. It requires familiarity with landscape tools and a group of 3-4 adults.

Would-be through hikers/bikers
We sometimes are asked about the feasibility of hiking or biking the entire 114-mile length of the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail, since this is common practice on other regional trails (Tahoe Rim, PCT, Muir, etc). Please remember a few limitations, which is why we recommend it as a series of day trips:
⦁ There is NO TRAIL in two sections east of Sparks, so the freeway is the only option there.
⦁ For a bike, the trip is probably doable, with an overnight stop in Reno/Sparks.
⦁ There are no camping locations east of Boca, and much of the property is private (also who would want to camp next to the 24/7 freeway and railroad?)
⦁ The trip could be done using motels with a 25-mile gap from Truckee to Verdi.

Update on homeless camps
As many of us have seen, the homeless camps along the river east of Downtown Reno are just terrible. For an in-depth story with photos, see
https://reno.newsreview.com/2021/03/29/the-truckees-blighted-banks/ (RNR 3-29-21 article). The good news is that the Nevada Cares Campus will be open for homeless in their dorm-type facility starting by the end of April, and they also have a camping area that will open as we get to summer. With the campus opening—which will include meal service, shower/bathroom facilities, and services, it is hoped many of the homeless will move there. The operation will really expand in July when 10 new county staff will run the operation in partnership with local service providers, and hopefully then our local governments will become more assertive in moving people to that facility. It is 15 acres and will be able to accommodate more than 1,000 people.
If any of our newsletter readers want to help with this situation, you can volunteer or donate through Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful.
