Tailwind Stories

I am preparing for a trip that has been in the works for a long time. A small group of friends and I are doing a bike ride in Ireland, a country known for good Irish beer, whiskey and rain. The Guinness tours are already booked!

We are heading to the southwest portion of the island to ride. Based on their typical weather patterns, I have purchased waterproof socks, if that is even possible, and total rain gear from head to toe! I am sure you can guess what I will wish on the Blarney stone.

We anticipate lots of green meadows, old castles, and pastoral scenes while cycling. We will be on the coast for some of the ride, so I expect to see rugged coastline and small fishing villages. It will be so different than what we experience as you cycle in Nevada. I am looking forward to a change of scenery.

But I will be glad to be back home to enjoy the beautiful views of the eastern Sierras and the colors of the mountains. We will be back to see the cottonwoods turn their fall colors that pop with the green background of our pines. Add in some sagebrush and you can’t get much more beautiful! The Nevada Art Museum recently had an amazing display of artwork from Maynard Dixon. He captured the wonderful colors that surround us. I have enjoyed taking the time to notice those color variations more after enjoying his exhibit. If you missed it, search for Maynard Dixon. It may remind you how fortunate we are and why we are a destination for others who may not have the mountain view that we do.

Photo Contest Entries Needed

Last year, we introduced a photo contest of pictures taken along the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail. We had over 50 entries and this year, we are hoping for more! We had some outstanding entries and have used them in our social media postings and newsletters. Winners will receive some wonderful trail bling and other goodies.

The categories are Bikes, People, Landscape, Flora/Fauna

  • You can submit up to two photos for each category

  • You must agree that we can use them, and we will credit the photographer

  • Please list where along the trail that the photo was taken and the date it was taken

  • Submit your photos to info@tahoepyramidtrail.org by October 31st!

Our board members will again vote on the winners. Last year, we had a difficult time choosing, and I hope that we do that again this year. We had so many amazing photos! Thank you to all that participated last year, and we hope to see your new entries this year with more amateur photographers joining in!

History of the Parks by Bike

Join us on Saturday, September 29th for a leisurely bike tour starting at Idlewild Park, next to the California Building. Jill Richardson (a volunteer for the Tahoe Meadows Park Foundation and the Historical Reno Preservation District) will lead us by bike to Mayberry Park, using the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail. The ride is about 7 miles one way. We will stop at the parks along the way, learning about their history and the people instrumental in Reno acquiring the land. You will hear of the ranching families that populated Reno during the Comstock days such as the Mayberry, Dorostkar, Caughlin families and others.

The bike portion will take about 90 minutes. At the end, if you have any questions about any of the parks in Reno, you will have an opportunity to chat with Jill at Mayberry Park. She is also familiar with the ditch systems throughout Reno if you have additional questions about them. Mary Beth Roselli (on the board of the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail) will spend a few minutes talking about the expansion plans for the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail. We will have some snacks so allow time to enjoy Mayberry Park.

Make sure your bike is in working condition. Helmets are required and bring a bottle of water too. Snacks will be provided. A sag vehicle will be there to provide support, if a bike breaks down. You will be responsible for getting yourself and your bikes back to Idlewild.

This is a donation ride. Proceeds will be divided between the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail and the Reno Parks District.

Please sign up at info@tahoepyramidtrail.org.  Use “Bike Tour” as the header of the email.

In the event of inclement weather, an email will be sent out 2 hours before the event to everyone that has registered if the ride is cancelled.

Trail Volunteers ~ Call to Action!

As I sit here enjoying another section of our trail, I reflect on the tremendous amount of work it takes to promote the trail, and to keep it up and running for everyone to enjoy. We are in constant need of volunteers for many different activities on the trail.

I am reaching out to everyone to get a list together of those who wish to volunteer their time and services in any way to help the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail continue its mission. Currently, we need volunteers to help with the Rock Reno Half Marathon, Relay and 5K Rock Reno Half Marathon, Relay & 5K - Reno Running Company coming up on October 6th. In conjunction with Reno Running Company, we want to man a few stations along the river where the TPT goes through downtown Reno, and to help clean up these stations afterward. If you are interested in helping out in this endeavor, or in any other endeavor, and want to stay in contact as opportunities arise, please send an email to volunteers@tptrail.org and you will be added to our list of potential volunteers. Let me also know what types of work you’d be interested in helping with and if you’d like to help on October 6th.

In fact, later this year, we will be seeking out small groups of people or organizations to help with adopting small sections of the trail to maintain throughout the year. This is a continual effort that goes on year-round, and if it weren’t for our dedicated groups of volunteers, the trail would quickly become overgrown.

Thanks to everyone for your support of the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail!
