Our Chairman has been driving up to Truckee quite often this winter, and every time she looks at the Truckee River in the canyon and in Reno, the water level appears very low. After our last storm, we know the snow pack is at 94% average which is amazing, compared to where we started in January – thank goodness! So why does the Truckee River look as it does? Here a short synopsis:
As of December of 2015, after 26 years of negotiation, the Truckee River Operating Agreement (TROA) was approved. This agreement manages the water from Lake Tahoe, flowing through the Truckee River to Pyramid Lake, regulating the flow to users and reservoirs so that we are covered in both drought and abundant years. Janet Phillips was heavily involved with this agreement, representing TMWA. The States of Nevada and California, the U.S. Department of Interior, and the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe were also involved in the negotiations.
Our other reservoirs, Stampede, Prosser Creek, and Boca are currently at 82%, 24%, and 15% respectively. So now you know why the Truckee River is not roaring at this time of the year. Just wait and keep your eye out for the high water mark at Wingfield Park this spring!
