Fall Color on the Truckee River in the Floriston area

Fall is a transition time for me.  I tend to bike less and hike more.  I love the change of seasons because each one brings me to other activities.  I am not quite ready for ski season.  Give me until December, please!

American Trails is an organization that promotes trail systems throughout the Americas and the health benefits that they provide.  They are the ones who put on the International Trails Summit that took place in Reno earlier this year. Check them out sometime at americantrails.org

I was on their website and was intrigued by many of their articles but one stood out, the benefits of recreating on trails for mental health. We all know the physical benefits of trails but the mental benefits are equally important. With Fall approaching, I think this is a good topic to explore.

A study was done that demonstrated only 2 hours a week provides significant benefits to mental health on a long-term basis.  This could be done in a single day or throughout the week, it did not matter.   After only 20 minutes, your stress levels drop, your mind starts to put life in a better perspective and finally, you become less tense and start to relax.  Sounds pretty good, right?

As the days get shorter it may be more difficult to take that walk every day or every other day.  Make some time on your days off to walk and take care of yourself!

Ride the Rez Annual Event is On!

I would say the least hiked/biked section of the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail is the portion from Wadsworth to Pyramid Lake.  It has some of the most beautiful fall colors found along the trail. Come see for yourself on October 22nd for our annual Ride the Rez Event.

We will be riding from the Nixon Store to Wadsworth, which is about 19 miles long and will be on a mix of paved roads, dirt roads, and single track.  You will need a gravel or a mountain bike in good working condition. We will have a trailer to haul back bikes at the end of the ride in Wadsworth, which can accommodate about 15 bikes. You can also ride both ways to avoid having to haul your bikes. Taking the road back on your bike is a nice option.

A day-use permit is required by the Paiute tribe and is $22 per vehicle (no matter how many people are on board).  You can purchase these online at:  https://pyramidlake.us/permits.

The Procrastinating Pedalers are sponsoring the ride and do require that riders join their club.  This has to do with insurance that covers members if there are injuries that happen during the ride. They require memberships on all of their gravel and mtb rides.

In past years, Janet Phillips would either ride or meet the group about halfway through and give a brief talk.  This is the first year where she will be with us in spirit only so we will honor her in some manner along the trail.  See the picture from last year!

Amy and Randy Collins will be guiding the ride. More details will follow on the Pedalers Meetup site soon. In the meantime you can visit their website at https://www.pedalers.org/.  And if you have any questions, please send them to info@tptrail.org.

Generous Donation by Race178

For many years, Jim Kidder and friends have hosted Exchange No. 2 for the Reno Tahoe Odyssey race.  Jim is an advisor on the TPT board.  He has been a long-time friend of the Trail in many aspects, and hosting this stop is just one.

Due to his years of involvement with RTO and Janet’s passing, Race178 presented the trail with a check for $2,000.

It takes a community to build a trail and Reno has an amazing one centered around biking, hiking, and running. Thank you Race178 for your support and generous donation. Jim, we appreciate everything you do for the trail.  Your enthusiasm is contagious!
