Over the past few years, I have been spending more time on the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail (TPT), probably because of my various roles with the Trail. As Board Chair for the two years after Janet’s passing, I used the trail for guidance and direction. I marveled at the love people put into building and maintaining this trail. Thankfully, we hired Mark Cameron and JoAnne Gipson during that time. I was overwhelmed, and with their help, we moved forward. We added new board members, lost a few but the solid pillars remained: Bill von Phul, Sam Limerick, and Nathan Robison all stepped up even more.
When Chris Askin took over as Board Chair, I became the Marketing/Communications Chair. I now experience the trail for the pure beauty and the sound of the Truckee, collecting pictures and stories from the people I meet.
I truly believe there are no coincidences, and most everyone I’ve conversed with on the trail has affected me. Mike Mayberry, who has Alzheimer's, is now hiking the PCT and is an inspiration, and, by the number of hits on Facebook, has inspired many more. Sandy and Lauren, who have walked the TPT twice over are inspiring, and the couple from South Dakota, who were starting their ride at Farad, had questions about which way to go. Bill and I happened to drive up at that moment. Many conversations start with a simple hello, and people love to share their experiences on the trail, including the wildlife they've seen, the beautiful sunsets, and their favorite memories. The list goes on. I am fortunate to be the recipient of these stories. These conversations inspire me.
If you have never worked on trail maintenance, give it a try. I’ve been to portions of the trail that you can barely make out due to the Willows or Whitetop invasion. By the end of the work day, you see this welcoming trail. It’s a gratifying feeling. It is also never-ending! For me, it connects me more deeply to the TPT and reminds me how grateful I am to have it be a part of my life. Thank you to all I’ve had the privilege of talking to and working with during my time on the TPT.
