Tailwinds Stories

Over the past few years, I have been spending more time on the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail (TPT), probably because of my various roles with the Trail.  As Board Chair for the two years after Janet’s passing, I used the trail for guidance and direction.  I marveled at the love people put into building and maintaining this trail. Thankfully, we hired Mark Cameron and JoAnne Gipson during that time.  I was overwhelmed, and with their help, we moved forward.  We added new board members, lost a few but the solid pillars remained: Bill von Phul, Sam Limerick, and Nathan Robison all stepped up even more.

When Chris Askin took over as Board Chair, I became the Marketing/Communications Chair. I now experience the trail for the pure beauty and the sound of the Truckee, collecting pictures and stories from the people I meet.

I truly believe there are no coincidences, and most everyone I’ve conversed with on the trail has affected me.  Mike Mayberry, who has Alzheimer's, is now hiking the PCT and is an inspiration, and, by the number of hits on Facebook, has inspired many more.  Sandy and Lauren, who have walked the TPT twice over are inspiring, and the couple from South Dakota, who were starting their ride at Farad, had questions about which way to go.  Bill and I happened to drive up at that moment.  Many conversations start with a simple hello, and people love to share their experiences on the trail, including the wildlife they've seen, the beautiful sunsets, and their favorite memories. The list goes on. I am fortunate to be the recipient of these stories. These conversations inspire me.

If you have never worked on trail maintenance, give it a try.  I’ve been to portions of the trail that you can barely make out due to the Willows or Whitetop invasion.  By the end of the work day, you see this welcoming trail.  It’s a gratifying feeling.  It is also never-ending!  For me, it connects me more deeply to the TPT and reminds me how grateful I am to have it be a part of my life.  Thank you to all I’ve had the privilege of talking to and working with during my time on the TPT.

Finding Joy on the TPT - Part II

Now that we’ve been introduced to Sandy and Lauren in the June Newsletter, let’s continue down the trail to hear more of their adventures along the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail (TPT). If you have not read that edition, here is a link:

After discovering the Boardwalk in 2022,  they continued to hike and broke it into sixteen sections and 42.44 miles in 2022. Their path did not necessarily follow the flow of the Truckee, but was segmented due to timing, traffic conditions, smoke from forest fires, and weather conditions. Again, remember they did out-and-back sections each time.

In 2023, they found themselves quite busy with trips, a sprained ankle, and a broken elbow so their TPT hikes only came to 21.34 miles and four sections.  They tackled the more urban parts of the trail.

In 2024, the New Year brought out the hiking boots on January 1st, and they started on the Eastern sections.  Started is a relative term. They hiked one section on New Year's Day.  The rest of their hikes in 2024 completed some of the gaps west. Most of these were along 89, which can be challenging for any hiker.  They ended up waving at the cars for visibility. It turned into quite a bit of entertainment with the people in the car waving back! It’s lovely when you can turn a not so pleasant task into something fun. Those are the people you want with you hiking, especially since they experienced snow, rain, wind, and hot sun on their journey!  A sense of humour goes a long way! They completed 16.62 miles in five sections.

They were procrastinating……  Eastward is unknown and unfamiliar territory so thankfully 2025, they were determined to complete their journey with gusto!

The link below describes the rest of their journey.  Find out what their favorite sections were, their advice on hiking the TPT, and their experience as they journeyed into the unknown! Sandy also shares the details of each section on their hike with notes and information.

3rd Annual Photo Contest

This is an amazing time to be out hiking along the Truckee River, on the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail (TPT).  Whether it's in the canyon or a downtown urban setting, there are opportunities to cool off on these hot summer days.

2025 will be the 3rd year we are running the TPT Photo Contest.  Since the deadline is at the end of October, we always receive a large number of Fall photos, which are always beautiful.  The Cottonwoods along the River eastward always seem to find their way into a winner's circle.  However, right now, we have some amazing colors in our hills, with varying shades of greens and browns and wildflowers sprinkled throughout.  Take that phone or camera and start looking for that winning shot. The categories are a bit of a shift from previous years but not by much:

  • Flora/Fauna

  • Landscape

  • Hiking

  • Biking

Submit your photos to info@tahoepyramidtrail.org.  Let us know where, on the trail, the photos were taken.  You can submit up to two in each category. You must agree that we can reprint them, giving you credit whenever we do use them.  The deadline is October 31st, but there is no need to wait till then to submit. This contest is for amateur photographers.

Thank you to all who have submitted photos in the past.  The TPT board members are the ones who vote and look forward to seeing all the entries.
